Back to the Basics

Ever wonder how you got where you are? After having a difficult past few years, I definitely did some soul searching. Giving it lots of thought and “naval gazing” time, I decided I needed to get back to the basics in my faith. The core, the very foundation of my biblical beliefs.

Much the same way, I studied my appearance and decided I needed to get back to the basics with taking care of my physical self. Get down to the basics, the foundation, of my body… my skin. The body definitely shows on the outside much of what we are experiencing inwardly. And sometimes there are residual effects long after we have moved on mentally and emotionally. Ever look at yourself and think, “Wow – I feel better than I look!” It usually takes on more of a note of, “I look old” or, “yikes!”

The first thing I did was look at all the products I had scattered all over my bathroom. The shower, in the cabinets, on my counter, on my shelves – there were products EVERYWHERE! I felt overrun with all the products… it was so overwhelming.

Any of this you? If so, perhaps it is time to get back to the basics of skincare/selfcare for yourself. Where to start?

To start – in regards to your existing skin care products – don’t throw them away! If you no longer like them or find them ineffective, then use them on another area on your body. Use your facial cleanser as a body wash. Use any exfoliation products on your hands, elbows, knees or feet. Use your moisturizer(s) on your body after a shower or on your hands when you go to bed.

Don’t waste money or product!

Next step – get a facial. It’s the first start to getting back to the basics. Why? Well, this step is important in a few ways.

  • Facials using massaging techniques instantly help calm your central nervous system. When deep breathing is incorporated, you circulate more oxygen throughout the body, including the brain which can help with mental clarity.
  • A facial is a great start to healthy skin. The exfoliation, extractions and face massage all help jump start the skin’s natural renewal process.
  • It’s a time to discuss your current skincare concerns and needs with your Facialist. Ask what main ingredient(s) your skin needs at this time to further promote naturally healthy, glowing skin. (Oh! Make sure to bring a list of your current products so your Facialist has a better idea of “where your skin has been.”)

Now… a simplified plan. Make sure you have your basics! Based on your Facialist’s recommendations, make sure you have a cleanser, eye cream, serum, and moisturizer with the key ingredient(s) you need and start small, basic. Too many products can feel overwhelming and result in you doing nothing for your skin.

Lastly – and I cannot shout this from the rooftops enough – SPF!! Use it, use it, use it. The radiation from the sun accounts for 80% of skin damage and skin concerns. That means YOU have 80% control over your skin damage. Now that you know this, do something about it.

Use SPF every day. Sunny or cloudy… use it.
