While I was putting together this information for those with Lipedema, I realized it is actually good info for us all! So please, even if you do not have Lipedema, read on! It will not be a waste of your time.
What is Lipedema? First of all, it is not normal fat. It is an adipose tissue disorder found mostly in women. It can appear at puberty, childbearing or even menopause. It is a symmetrical in the legs – hip to knees, or hips to ankles. Feet are not affected. It can also appear in arms, but not as common. The lower body/legs grow larger than the rest of the body and can begin exhibit signs of “cellulite” though it is not true cellulite. The feel under the skins can feel like grains of rice or peas, bumpy and hard. The skin is tight from the swelling and can bruise easily. Skin temperature in these areas can feel different from the rest of the body. This is a short, condensed list… if curious or concerned, a Vascular Specialist is who would diagnose the condition. Be aware… not all are equal. All Vascular Specialist are not trained in this area. Find one who is.
